A trip to Sicily through its wines!

I was really excited to be invited to this wine tasting – an in person event – on November 30, 2021 at Montreal’s Culinary Guild which focused on wines from Sicilia. It was a great learning event as we heard about the different grapes varietals and wine areas on this beautiful Italian island.

We started with 5 white wines:

(1) Cusumano Angimbé, a lovely blend of 30% Chardonnay and 70% Insolia. Available at the SAQ (code 11097101) at $14.05.

(2) Planeta La Segreta II Bianco, another fun blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Chardonnay, 10% Fiano and 10% Viognier. What an interesting mix. Available at the SAQ (code 741264) at $15.95.

(3) Natale Verga I Balzi, an organic wine made 100% of Grillo. Herbal and salty. Available at the SAQ (code 13640584) at $16.85.

(4) Corte Camari Grillo, also very herbal and salty. Cost is $19.50.

(5) Donnafugata Anthìlia was our final white wine. A lovely blend of 75% Catarratto, 15 % Ansonica and 10% Grillo. Available at the SAQ (code 10542137) at $16.85.

We then moved to 4 red wines:

(1) Cademusa, an organic wine made of 80% Nero d’Avola and 20% Syrah. Delicious intense cherry flavours, a souvenir of childhood candy. Available at the SAQ (code 12699509) at $10.80.

(2) Natale Verga I Balzi, an organic wine made 100% of Nero d’Avola. Available at the SAQ (code 13806134) at $16.85.

(3) Cusumano Benuara, a blend of 70% Nero d'Avola and 30 % Syrah. Intense lovely flavours. Available at the SAQ (code 10539915) at $17.30.

(4) Planeta Frappato was our final red wine. 100% Frappato. Available at the SAQ (code 12640611) at $22.35.
