My Top 5 rosé wines this summer 2023

Guess what? It's labour day weekend in Canada and we are going through a heatwave in Montreal... which means: don't put away that rosé wine just yet! Actually, it's perfectly acceptable to drink rosé wine anytime during the year, but it remains a popular choice for hot sunny summer days.

And as we are going through this heat wave in Montreal this week, I thought of sharing my Top 5 rosé wines from this summer.

Here we go in no particular order:

I love this organic rosé from Parajes del Valle produced with 100% Bobal from the high vineyards of Manchuela with aromas and flavours of raspberry. Good to sip by itself or with buttery snack like popcorn. 12.5% alcohol. 1.2 g/L sugar content. I was so happy see this rosé back at the SAQ this summer as it was a huge hit when it made its debut a few years ago. Available at the SAQ (SAQ code: 14984282) at $16.20 (UPC code: 08423110752591). Produced by Senorio del Jucar and represented by Agence Vinicole Inc.

Malivoire Lady Bug 2021 (Niagara, Ontario, Canada)

Another of my favourite rosé, the Lady Bug from Malivoire, an estate in Beamsville Bench, on the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario (Canada). The nice blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 20 % Gamay and 20 % Pinot Noir leads to a pleasant explosion of red cherries in the mouth. With the VQA regulated designation (Vintners Quality Alliance). Good to sip by itself or with grilled sea food. 12% alcohol. 5.9 g/L sugar content. Available at the SAQ (SAQ code: 13747891) at $17.70 (UPC code: 00786934767980). Represented by Sélections Le Maitre de Chai Inc.

M. Chapoutier Marius Rosé 2022 (Languedoc-Roussillon, France)

It was nice to rekindle with the Marius Rosé from Michel Chapoutier, a nice blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Cinsault. With the regulated designation (VDP/IGP): Vin de pays/Indication géographique protégée. A fantastic rosé for the warmer days. Nice pink cotton candy colour in the glass and intense aromas and flavours of raspberries. Can be drank by itself or paired well with a salty snack like BBQ chips. 12.5% alcohol. 1.4 g/L sugar content. Available at the SAQ (SAQ code: 14678568) at $13.95 (UPC code: 03391180021945). Represented by Vins Philippe Dandurand Ltée

C'est La Vie! Rosé Syrah-Grenache (Languedoc-Roussillon, France)

This is a lovely rosé I discovered this summer! C'est la vie! a rosé blend with Syrah and Grenache from Albert Bichot. With the regulated designation (VDP/IGP): Vin de pays/Indication géographique protégée. A delicious rosé with a pleasant explosion of cherry flavours in the mouth. Can be drank by itself or paired well with nachos and a slightly spicy salsa. 12.8% alcohol. 1.4 g/L sugar content. Available at the SAQ (SAQ code: 11073918) at $14 (UPC code: 00087113115258). Represented by Elixirs, Vins et Spiritueux Inc.

I was so excited to discover and try this rosé from Aveleda in the Vinho Verde region in Portugal at the Vinho Verde tasting event in Montreal in June. What a great way to kick off the summer... A perfect blend of 50% Azal Tinto and 50 % Touriga Nacional. With a light pink colour, light flavours of red berries and floral aromas. Can be drank by itself or paired well with vegetable spring rolls and a slightly spicy sauce. 11% alcohol. 4.5 g/L sugar content. Available at the SAQ (SAQ code: 15157852) at $13.95 (UPC code: 05601096020498). Produced by Aveleda Sociedade Agricola e Commercial and represented by Vins Philippe Dandurand Ltée

As you can see from my Top 5, I prefer fruity rosé wines.

Cheers to summer sticking around a little longer! A great reason to open a bottle of rosé. What is your favourite rosé wine? Any great discoveries of rosé wines this summer?
