Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri Masterclasses - Italy in a nutshell


It was very exciting to head to Montreal Science Centre June 21 for the Gambero Rosso event.


The event started with the famous Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri Masterclasses.

The first Masterclass focused on 15 great wines of the North and Center of Italy.

These are the wines tasted during the first Masterclass:

- Ferghettina Franciacorta Pas Dosé Ris. 33 Riserva 2012 (Lombardy)

- Umani Ronchi Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Cl. Plenio Ris. 2018 (Marche)

- Cantina Tollo Montepulciano D'Abruzzo Mo Ris. 2015 (Abruzzo)

- Speri Amarone della Valpolicella Cl. Sant'Urbano 2015 (Veneto)


My top 5 favourite wines from the first Masterclass featuring the North and Center of Italy were:

4th - Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera V. Elena Ris. 2013 (Piedmont)

3rd - Paolo Conterno Barolo Ginestra Ris. 2011 (Piedmont)

2nd - Chiara Condello Romagna Sangiovese Predappio Le Lucciole Ris. 2016 (Emilia Romagna) where I loved the the flavour of ripe cherries.

1st - Velenosi Rosso Piceno Sup. Roggio del Filare 2018 (Marche) where I loved the aroma of cigar and the incredible lovely smoky flavour and slightly spicy finish.

The second Masterclass focused on 16 great wines of the Center and South of Italy.

These are the wines tasted during the second Masterclass:

- Cusumano Etna Bianco Alta Mora 2020 - Alta Mora (Sicily)

- Rocca delle Macie Chianti Cl. Gran Selezione Riserva di Fizzano 2019 (Tuscany)

- Lamole di Lamole Chianti Cl. Gran Selezione Vign. di Campolungo 2017 (Tuscany)

- Colle Massari Brunello di Montalcino 2015 - Poggio di Sotto (Tuscany)

- Piaggia Carmignano Ris. 2016 (Tuscany)

My top 5 favourite wines from the second Masterclass featuring the Center and South of Italy were:

5th - Francesco Tornatore Etna Rosso 2017 (Sicily)

4th - Tenute del Cerro Montefalco Sagrantino 2012 - Colpetrone (Umbria)

3rd - Torrevento Castel del Monte Rosso V. Pedale Ris. 2016 (Puglia)

2nd - Tenuta Gorghi Tondi Nero D'Avola Bio 2018 (Sicily) with awesome flavours of cherries.

1st - Tenuta di Arceno Valadorna 2013 (Tuscany), an awesome blend of Merlot & Cabernet Franc.

These two Masterclasses were great ways to discover great wines from Italy in a nutshell...
