Gigondas aiming to conquer Montreal

It was on November 14 that was held at the beautiful PHI Centre in old Montreal the event Gigondas conquering Montreal (Gigondas à la conquête de Montréal). I went to the event very curious as I was not familiar with Gigondas. I learned it's a French wine Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in the southern Rhône wine region of France. It is primarily a red wine region, with Grenache as the main grape varietal, with a very small amount of rosé wine produced. So far, no white wines have carried the Gigondas appellation, but that will change in 2023 with Clairette Blanche as the main grape varietal.

The event started with a masterclass hosted by sommelier Michelle Bouffard featuring 8 wines from the 2013 vintage. The 2013 vintage was atypical, described as fresh and humid, it was a late year with harvesting in October and the wines remained closed longer.

An underestimated vintage, we tasted these 8 Gigondas wines from 2013:

(1) Château de Saint-Cosme, organic with 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre and 5 % Cinsault

(2) Domaine du Terme, with vines averaging 45 years, produced with 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre

(3) Château de la Croix des Pins le Parpaillon, with 55% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre

(4) Domaine de la Tourade Font des Aieux, with 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre et 10% Syrah

(5) Domaine de Boissan Selection Victor, which I really enjoyed with 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah

(6) Pierre Amadieu Romane Machotte, with vines averaging 55 years, produced with 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre and 15% Syrah

(7) Montirius Confidentiel, with intense flavours of cherry, produced with 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre

(8) La Ferme du Mont, with vines averaging 60 years, produced with 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre

We were treated to a nice surprise at the end of the masterclass with an additional wine from 2001 from Pierre Amadieu. I would describe it as simply WOW produced with less Mourvèdre and more Syrah vs the 2013 version we tasted prior.

Are you a fan of Gigondas?
