The joy of Cabernet Sauvignon from Argentina

I attended the virtual wine tasting event celebrating the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Day with Trapiche on August 26 2020. Organized by Dandurand Wines the wine tasting event on Zoom was hosted by Trapiche winemaker Sergio Casé. We tasted four wines he produces and his passion for what he does was obvious.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the third most planted red varietal in Argentina. What makes the Trapiche wines different and interesting? Sergio said they know they have good conditions in their region and work with that advantage.

I asked Sergio what is for him the biggest misconception regarding Cabernet Sauvignon. He believes winemakers need to have fun with this grape, for example by experimenting planting it in other areas. The results will be different aromas and flavours, and this is what he did in Mendoza, playing with the different areas available to him like the Uco Valley and Cruz de Piedra, Maipú.

His answer illustrates the beauty of planting the same grape in different areas and regions: you will get a different result. It shows how a region affects the grape due to many different factors: the soil, hours of sun, amount of rain,... Hence, it’s a good idea to try Cabernet Sauvignon from different regions to find out which you enjoy most. I must admit I can’t remember drinking Cabernet Sauvignon from Argentina before this tasting but this tasting will definitely lead me to keep it in mind next time I go to the liquor store.

The four wines we tasted are available at the SAQ and/or LCBO:

What is your favourite Cabernet Sauvignon?
